Odds and Wheeling by Scott Brouse (Team Member, Toronto)

Some might already know all this but I thought I would throw it out there for those who don't. Every person who is serious about winning the lottery must understand the odds that are against them. In lotto 6/49 the odds of getting all six numbers from one single $2.00 ticket is 1 in 13,983,816 which is astronomical. So the objective is to figure out how to lower the odds, the obvious is play a few more tickets but that barely increases them. The next best way is something called Wheeling which is a mathematical way to increase the odds in a lotto game and you do this by playing more than just six numbers. To make it simple lets say you pick 7 numbers instead of 6 and you want to cover every possible 6 number combination of those 7 numbers, you would play 7 sets(games) of  6 numbers this is because one additional number can be combined with all 6 other numbers exactly 7 times. Now by doing this and adding just one number your odds now went from one in 13,983,816 down to one in 1,997,688. If you wheel 8 numbers and play all the combinations you would play 28 sets (games)and your odds are now down to one in 499,422. If you wheel 12 numbers you would have to play 924 sets(games)because their are 924 six number combinations in 12 numbers, but the odds are now down to one in 15,134. If you wheel 13 numbers you have to play 1,716 sets(games) but the odds are down to one in 8149. The more numbers you use the greater your odds go down but the more expensive it is to play and the higher the numbers you wheel the more cost prohibited it is  to play an example is using 24 numbers would cost $269,192.00 for one 6/49 draw. The way to get around this is by using abbreviated wheeling  which cover enough combinations for minimum win guarantees. The whole point to this is to see how astronomical the odds are but there are ways to lower it. Now doesn't going to the store and asking for one quick pick seem dumb, that's tax for the stupid. Playing smart and not relying on dumb luck
